Respecting a protected structure

This project presented the challenge of working within the limits of a protected building that dates back to the mid-19th century. We designed a two-storey, 38,000 sq ft nursing home to sit into the contoured landscape while staying faithful to the original Shankill House structure.

We planned the private rooms to take advantage of natural light and sea views where possible. We clustered many of the rooms around landscaped courtyard spaces. We also designed one of these courtyards as a sensory garden as a tranquil space for residents.

All told, we incorporated 78 bed spaces into the nursing home, along with ample living and dining spaces as well as service areas.
